Frequently asked

What is Microsoft Purview?
Purview is the umbrella brand for Microsoft's data governance, protection, risk, and compliance tools — sensitivity labels, DLP, records management, insider risk, eDiscovery, and audit — used from a single admin portal.
Do sensitivity labels require Microsoft 365 E5?
The manual labels themselves are included in Microsoft 365 E3, F3, Business Premium, and A3. Automatic labelling, service-side auto-application, and container labelling with additional Purview capabilities generally require Microsoft 365 E5 or the Purview add-ons.
Is DLP a replacement for insider risk management?
No. DLP blocks a specific action against a defined policy in real time. IRM detects patterns of risky behaviour over time for review. Most mature programmes use both, targeting different failure modes.
Do I need records management or just retention?
Retention policies and labels are usually enough for organisations with light statutory obligations. Records management (record labels, regulatory records, disposition review) adds operational overhead and is aimed at regulated industries with statutory record-keeping.
