Power Platform

Microsoft's low-code platform family — Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, Power Pages, and Copilot Studio.

The Microsoft Power Platform is the family of low-code tools shipping alongside Microsoft 365: Power Apps for custom applications, Power Automate for workflow automation, Power BI for analytics, Power Pages for external-facing websites, and Copilot Studio for custom Copilots and agents. The platform shares an underlying database (Dataverse), a connector library spanning Microsoft and third-party services, and an admin model based on environments. Most Microsoft 365 plans include limited Power Platform usage; premium connectors, Dataverse, and the more sophisticated capabilities require Power Platform per-user or per-app licensing.

Worked example

An operations team's monthly reporting process starts as a Power Automate flow that pulls data from several systems into a shared Dataverse table, a Power Apps canvas app that lets regional managers correct and annotate that data before it's finalised, and a Power BI report that visualises the finalised result for leadership — three separate Power Platform tools, one shared Dataverse environment underneath them, and one consistent set of security roles controlling who can see and edit what across all three, rather than three disconnected systems each with its own separate login and permission model.

Common pitfalls

Letting environments multiply without a clear strategy — every team spinning up its own Power Platform environment for its own project — is the most common governance headache, since environments are the boundary for data loss prevention policies, and an unmanaged sprawl of environments makes consistent DLP enforcement nearly impossible to maintain. Assuming Power Platform usage is entirely free because "it comes with Microsoft 365" undersells how quickly Dataverse storage, premium connectors, and AI Builder credits move a real deployment into per-user or per-app licensing territory. And treating the Power Platform as a collection of unrelated tools rather than one platform sharing Dataverse, connectors, and an admin center misses the actual value proposition — the tools are far more powerful used together than each used in isolation.
