Microsoft Purview

Microsoft Purview is Microsoft's unified brand for data governance, compliance, and risk management. It bundles previously separate products — Microsoft Information Protection, Data Loss Prevention, Records Management, Compliance Manager, eDiscovery, Insider Risk Management, Communication Compliance, Information Barriers, and Data Map (formerly Azure Purview) — under a single portal at purview.microsoft.com. Replaced the older Microsoft 365 Compliance Center brand in 2022. Most Purview capabilities are gated by Microsoft 365 E5, Microsoft 365 E5 Compliance, or standalone Purview add-on licences. Purview is the answer to "how do I govern, label, retain, and audit content in Microsoft 365."

Worked example

A healthcare organisation needs to prove it can find and produce every email and document mentioning a specific patient if regulators ask. Sensitivity labels applied automatically by Purview's trainable classifiers mark files containing health information as confidential; a retention policy keeps records for the legally required period even if a user tries to delete them; and when an actual request comes in, an eDiscovery case in the same Purview portal searches mailboxes, SharePoint, and Teams messages for that patient's name and exports every match with a defensible chain of custody — three previously separate product areas, one portal, one consistent set of underlying labels and policies.

Common pitfalls

Treating Purview as a single feature to "turn on" rather than a suite of separately configured capabilities (labels, DLP, retention, eDiscovery, insider risk each need their own setup) leads to disappointment when enabling one doesn't automatically activate the others. Assuming DLP and sensitivity labels are the same control is a very common mix-up: labels classify and can encrypt content, while DLP polices what happens to content based on its type or label — the two work together but solve different problems and are configured in different places within the portal. And underestimating the licensing gate is a frequent surprise at renewal — many of the more advanced Purview capabilities (Insider Risk Management, Communication Compliance, advanced eDiscovery) require Microsoft 365 E5 or a standalone add-on, not just any Microsoft 365 plan.
