Admin Center

The Microsoft 365 admin center at admin.microsoft.com — the primary tenant-level admin portal.

The Microsoft 365 admin center at admin.microsoft.com is the primary tenant-level admin portal for Microsoft 365. It's where administrators manage users and licences, view service health, configure organisation-wide settings, run billing, and access reports. From here, the left-hand navigation also links out to the specialist admin centers for each service — Microsoft Entra, Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, Purview, Defender, Intune, and Power Platform — each of which exposes far more configuration than the headline portal. Access is gated by Entra ID admin roles such as Global Administrator, User Administrator, and Exchange Administrator.

Worked example

A new IT hire needs to reset a colleague's password and check whether a licence is available for a new starter. Both tasks happen in the Microsoft 365 admin center itself — Users → the affected account → Reset password, and Billing → Licenses — without ever needing to open the Entra admin center or Exchange admin center. When that same hire later needs to build a Conditional Access policy, the admin center's own navigation hands them off to the Entra admin center, because Conditional Access configuration doesn't live in the headline portal at all.

Common pitfalls

Assuming every setting lives in the Microsoft 365 admin center because it's the first portal most admins see is a common early mistake — mailbox rules, transport rules, and most mail flow settings live in the Exchange admin center, sensitivity labels and DLP live in Purview, and device compliance policies live in Intune. Being assigned Global Administrator "to be safe" rather than the narrower role a task actually needs (User Administrator for resets, Exchange Administrator for mail flow) is a common over-privileging pattern this portal makes easy to fall into, since Global Admin can technically do everything visible here. And relying on the admin center's dashboard tiles as the single source of tenant health misses that service health, security posture, and compliance status each have their own dedicated, more detailed view in their respective specialist portal.
